What Is Emotional Freedom?

What Is Emotional Freedom?

By Shafiya Eve

Are you free or do you carry emotional baggage that prevents your every attempt for inner peace and outer success? Your emotional freedom is at your fingertips and you can tap into it.

Do you ever feel or think that you are not “good enough” or slim enough, smart enough, pretty enough, rich enough, nice enough, patient enough. Are you haunted by previous experiences or events in your life by things you did, others did, you didn’t do, others didn’t do? Are you anxious or stressed. Do you feel blocked from moving forward by some unknown barrier? Is your happiness like a “coming event” when a certain something happens or you’ve accomplished, succeeded, been recognized, THEN you will be happy?  What would it be like to be free from these mysterious route responses and self-defeating beliefs?

EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique) is an emotional version of acupuncture (without the needles) wherein we stimulate certain meridian points by tapping on them with our fingertips. Since emotional stress can contribute to pain, disease and physical ailments, we often find that EFT provides astonishing physical relief.

First let me explain the nature of some of this emotional baggage which I refer to as energy disruptions. All of our experiences are imprinted in our subconscious. When we have experienced a trauma or repetitive negative input we develop an energy disruption. When a trauma or negative experience occurs it’s like putting a screw driver in the back of the TV and twisting in around the wires and you get a zzzzt (energy disruption) in your energy body.

Here is an example. Many years ago I accepted a job which required air travel across the US. On my first trip out of town I arrived at Richmond International Airport to depart, as soon as I entered the airport I began crying, for no reason. It was one of those sobbing cries, most embarrassing and quite befuddling to me. Once I got on the plane, I was fine and had no further upset through flight changes and my return flight home. Next trip out of Richmond, I enter the airport and the tears began to flow. I was at a loss as to what was going on with me. Life was good. Finally after much soul searching it dawned on me that the last time I saw my brother, a Marine pilot, his was waving goodbye at that very airport before his departure. He died a few months later in a mid-air collision.

There was 20 years between his passing and my airport sobbing experience. Once I realized the connection and worked with my grief issues regarding my brother, those trips out of town no longer were tearful and I experienced greater peace about my brother’s passing.

Another example is with a client who lives out of state and we did EFT phone sessions. I’ll call him Sam. Sam couldn’t understand why his business was not flourishing. He was a veteran marketer and knew he had all the right ingredients for success but everything seemed blocked. As we began our EFT tapping sessions, Sam revealed he had been immensely successful previously but with the turn in the economy had lost everything. It had been a deeply painful and bitter experience for him. In fact it became apparent he was terrified of his success because he might lose it all again. We worked quite a bit tapping on those fears until he could no longer feel that connection. The session was a great success to Sam and he has emailed me many times with gratitude and how well his business is going now.

One of EFT’s primary strengths is its ability to dramatically reduce, or eliminate, the sting of your emotional issues, based on a theory that negative emotions are caused by disturbances in the body’s energy system and that tapping on acupuncture points while focusing on a specific traumatic memory balances the system, thereby neutralizing the negative emotion.

The best thing about EFT is that anyone can do it. There is skill in delivery that an experienced practitioner offers and you can develop that for yourself as well.

Healing Margo the Dog

The Healing of Margo the Dog

Something was wrong! It was Saturday night, Margo-Rita (Margo), my dog, wouldn’t or couldn’t jump up on the bed. I could hear her stomach growling from across the room, her breathing was heavy and labored. I sat on the floor with her for a bit, deciding to let her be and see how her natural ability to heal would proceed. The next morning she was still suffering great stomach distress and panting heavily. I decided it was time to do a Reiki session.

When doing a Reiki session, one must be a clear channel for the healing energy, without being attached to the outcome; leaving that to God-Divine. Having no agenda of what or how the healing would unfold was a challenge. Margo is not only a companion but a friend. She has taught me so much. Her joy for life, ever smiling, ever present and her unconditional love for everyone has been a shining example. As pet lovers out there know, our creatures are dear family members.

During the Reiki healing session I let go of my desire of outcome for my beloved pet, trusting God’s will be done. After a while Margo heaved a deep sigh. Her body began to relax and then she passed gas repeatedly (ugh-stinky), she was transforming. As I continued the Reiki, her breathing settled down, she gave several deep sighs and fell asleep, just like my clients!

Reiki is genuinely holistic and non-invasive. It promotes balance – in body, mind and spirit and is valuable in boosting the immune system. It is used in many prestigious hospitals in our country in conjunction with traditional therapies like Chemotherapy and Radiation. I recently worked with a client going through Chemo and Radiation with remarkable results. Overwhelming clinical research has proven, Reiki alleviates pain and accelerates healing time. Reiki promotes wellness in people and animals.

Later that day I did one more session on Margo, her breathing completely stabilized, she released more noxious odors and was back to her usual joyful self. “These things ye shall do and more.”

Researching Reiki’s use on animals, I discovered it is used worldwide by animal lovers and is growing rapidly in popularity. So for all the skeptics who think much of the healing and relief people experience is just the power of suggestion, animals may be the greatest proof positive. Just watching Margo lie there with the ability to just be and see the dramatic changes and healing occur was astonishing. Even to me it was an amazing testimonial.

Freedom

(I wrote this about a year ago and was enjoying reflecting on it and decided to share. Hope you enjoy!)

Recently I became conscious of one of my unconscious rituals that had been going on for several months. Upon waking in the morning, my first awareness was of pain. The next thought was of the cause of the pain and those involved. I would lie in bed, getting furious and by time those hurting feet hit the ground, I was in a quiet rage. Several weeks ago, with coffee in hand, enjoying the morning sunrise, with a bit of the rage still leaking out, I decided I wasn’t going to start my day that way anymore. This poem is what tumbled out in response to that decision.

FREEDOM

Let me out of this prison of self torture

Please stop me from spending all I have, on blaming you and others

Those piercing arrows of pain, I hold tightly

Keeping us both in this prison of torture

There’s not much difference between the jailor and the jailed

In this prison where I hold us both hostage

How can I forgive with this tortured body and mind left behind?

My angst pushes me to the abyss of forgiveness –Freedom

I deserve it

You though are another matter

But I can no longer hold you captive

If I do, there in bondage I remain too

“God help me!”

Casting the gates wide, with trepidation fleeing I release you,

so that I may at last know freedom

A few days after the decision and the poem, I became aware that I now rarely wake up with that pain and certainly not the rage. Very interesting.

Grandmother was a Healer

My Grandmother was a Healer

Since my grandmother, Sadie Eve, lived in Beaufort, South Carolina and my family lived in Chester, Virginia, I only saw her several times a year on our vacations.

As a child I wanted to help people, to heal people; Sadie always discouraged my interest. She had been a hands-on healer and performed many miraculous healings but eventually chose to give it up. “It is pointless to heal someone’s illness if you do not heal the cause of the illness, because it just comes back in some other form,” she said. This has always weighed heavy in my thoughts and greatly affected me and my calling as a healer and teacher.

The desire to help and the desire to be of service are not always one and the same. One can be ego based, masked by good intentions and the other is selfless. True compassion is allowing someone to be right where they are. From that stance lasting and true healing can occur. For most of us it is a process. The physical body is quite resilient in healing, when brought into a true and positive alignment with the Real Self.

I am often called to intervene on someone’s behalf by a loved one. This can be a struggle. Unless someone is open to healing on a soul level, intervention can be disruptive, with the clashing of egos and wills. True healing is often incomprehensible though our illnesses have the potential to take us to the heights of inner healing.

Early on in my energy practice, I would see people transformed in the presence of the Divine energies. Yet within moments of raising themselves off the healing table life-long patterns often descended back upon them. Yes, they had a moment of respite. But the core issue was still waiting for them, and they immediately put the comfort of their wounded-self back on like a security blanket.

We live in a microwave/pill society. Fix me quick! Take a pill that will make it all go away. The bone may be set and heal, but the internal suffering goes on. Healing is undermined by our insecurities and fears until that internal suffering is clearly and compassionately brought into the Son Light of Spirit.

So, what to do? I am clear that people participate in and awaken into their healing. For most of us, learning to love ourselves is the hardest lesson of all. People often mistake self-love with vanity and self-centeredness. The love I am speaking of is indeed quite the opposite. Where there is self-love there lays the foundation for unconditional love, peace and acceptance for oneself and others and joy! Each healing session I participate in now is about healing at the core and experiencing one’s true Divine nature which is love.

After a Reiki Attunement

After a Reiki Attunement it takes approximately 21 days for the energies to fully integrate in the individual. During this time there is a  physical emotional and mental cleansing process that can occur in varying degrees. These “toxins” that no longer are of use may be released along with old thought patterns and emotions.

Even though this releasing is a good thing it can be very confusing and deeply uncomfortable for some. It may seem difficult to but it is helpful to be able to sit with this cleansing process, knowing it will pass, and allowing it to be what it is with a strong dose of compassion for yourself. Being able to witness this process and see what it has been. There are other techniques in my Channeling Energy Part I which help to Center, Ground and Release Negative Energy and Reclaim Your Scattered Self. Go here for a free download of these techniques.

I recommend the drinking of LOTS of pure water, soaking in hot baths (comfortably hot) with salts like epson, sea salt, baking soda to ease and excellerate the detoxing period. Also extremely important is getting Reiki sessions and doing Reiki on one’s self. Other useful healing tools are juicing, plenty of fresh vegetables and fruits to assist the bodies natural healing process and meditation.

You are cleaing the wreckage of the past. This too will pass that you will move into being your true authentic Self.

Cancer – EFT & Reiki

I have a client with cancer who is undergoing chemo and radiation. We have been working together for about a month using Reiki and EFT. I’ll call her Emmy. When Emmy first came she was stressed about the holidays and not having the strength to take care of everyone else and her deep dislike of taking all the pills her medical doctors prescribed. Using EFT on the mental and emotional aspects of these issues, she quickly came to ease with both of these situations. Emy also reported that when she first came she was experiencing a good amount of pain from her surgery which the doctors had said would go away in 6 mos. to a year. This pain disappeared during our first session and has not returned.

Week before last Emmy arrived looking like she had lost some weight. She said the sores in her mouth were too painful to eat (these sores were the result of her cancer treatments). We did 4 rounds, about 10 minutes of EFT and all her pain was gone. This past week she reported little to no pain still in her mouth and had been tapping on herself. Yeah!

This past week Emmy said she was having severe gastro distress and the ‘runs” and was tired and only wanted the Reiki. After her session she reported all her stomach distress was gone and that she felt peaceful and well rested.

I can’t take credit for any of these wonderful affects for Emy, for the work is done through me, not by me.

What is Reiki?

What is Reiki?

Wanting to share more than my own personal experience as a Reiki Master Practitioner I researched studies on Reiki in preparing this article and found overwhelming amounts of clinical and scientific data, spiritual insights and even an entire website dedicated to Reiki for Christians (http://www.christianreiki.org/).

Reiki (pronounced ray-key) is the “laying on of hands” for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing. It is an ancient healing technique that uses the life force energy to heal. Reiki addresses physical, emotional, mental and spiritual imbalances and sessions are usually done on a massage table with the client fully clothed except for shoes. The practitioner becomes a conduit for the channeling of this healing life force energy. Reiki does not impose a set of beliefs and is used by people of all backgrounds and faiths.

Clinical research supports Reiki’s effectiveness in treatment for pain and side effects for such conditions as fibromyalgia, AIDS, chemotherapy, cancer support, reducing nerve pain and cardiovascular risk, progression and/or anxiety in people with prostate cancer and so on.

What does science say? An independent research by Dr. Robert Becker and Dr. John Zimmerman showed that during Reiki sessions, the biomagnetic field of the practitioners’ hands is at least 1000 times greater than normal. They discovered that the pulses are in the same frequencies as brain waves, and sweep up and down from 0.3 – 30 Hertz (Hz), focusing mostly in 7 – 8 Hz, alpha state.  Independent medical research has shown that this range of frequencies will stimulate healing in the body.  For example, 2 Hz encourages nerve regeneration, 7Hz bone growth, 10Hz ligament mending, and 15 Hz capillary formation.

Dr. Becker states that ‘brain waves’ also travel throughout the body via the perineural system, the sheaths of connective tissue surrounding all nerves.  During Reiki treatment, these waves gather cumulative strength as they flow to the peripheral nerves of the body including the hands.  It is this system, more than any other, that regulates injury repair and system rebalance. Dr. Becker carried out his study on a world-wide array of cross-cultural subjects, and no matter what their belief systems or customs, or how opposed to each other their customs were, all tested the same.

There are also many prestigious hospitals around the country that offer Reiki, such as Johns Hopkins, Yale School of Nursing, Temple University, George Washington University Hospital, Stanford Medical Center and Mercy Hospital, to name just a few.

What do clients say who come for Reiki sessions? “That was profoundly relaxing.” “I feel so much more in balance and in tune with my body and surroundings.”  “I feel refreshed.” “My pain is gone.” “I no longer have those sinus headaches I’ve had for years.” “I no longer have the symptom of Reynaud’s disease.” “Colors seem much more vibrant.” “I feel great, like the weight of the world has been lifted.” “I am completely at peace.” “I feel so wonderfully alive.”

Clients report many different types of experiences during their Reiki sessions. Some feel as though they are floating, some see colors, or visions, almost all experience the radiant warmth of the Reiki energy. One woman described the experience as being as penetrating and comforting as a hot stone massage.

OLD WOUNDS BURIED ALIVE NEVER DIE

What I see on my own path of healing and those who come to me for “energy healing” is that false beliefs about oneself and unresolved emotional traumas are the underlying cause of many of our diseases and unfortunate life patterns. Further, by resolving and/or correcting these issues the Son-Light of the Soul is no longer blocked and flows effortlessly through us. Hence the healings, which I consider true healings, are ones that occur on the mental, emotional, physical and spiritual levels.
EFT  (Emotional Freedom Technique) isn’t “the only way”, but it is “a way” that
is serving many people to live a life free from the emotional bondage of past events and false, self defeating beliefs, replacing them with acceptance and love. One needs only the courage to look within.

We can espouse a theory on healing all we want. To me, the proof is, does it work?  That’s what attracted me so whole heartedly to EFT. EFT is a gentle tapping procedure which clears the body’s energy meridians. It was originally designed by and for the psychotherapy profession to clear emotional disturbances. It soon became evident that profound physical healings were also taking place.

EFT’s discovery statement is “The cause of all negative emotions is a disruption in the body’s energy system.”  These disruptions can be caused by myriad experiences such as rape, abuse, traumas of all sorts: physical, emotional, mental. Something as seemingly small as being ridiculed in front of the class in grade school to war memories, can create energy disruptions which we carry with us and manifest in other areas of our life.

In Doctor George G. Ritchie’s book Ordered to Return, George quotes a Rhodes Scholar and Chairman of the Department of Pathology at the Medical College of Virginia “…you who would be doctors. Something happens to a human being from the time he is well until the time he becomes clinically sick which is not included in scientific medicine as we know it today. Human beings do not suddenly become sick. Did you ever stop to think the word disease comes from two words dis (without) and ease (bliss, well being, happiness)? Do not man’s thoughts and actions lead to disease?”

So our unfortunate life patterns and our physical symptoms seem to be neon signs, red flags, if you will,  pointing the way to our deepest healings. When this happens my favorite prayer is “Thank you for the blessings before me which I cannot see.” Indeed, being given a message of dis-ease and looking within we are given an opportunity.

I plan on teaching EFT workshops this winter and spring. If you are interested in learning EFT for your personal use, as part of your healing service to others, or would like an appointment, please contact me.

Let It Begin with Me

I frequently watch my clients enter with pain and anguish etched in their facial expressions. Usually this is the result of disruptions or imbalances in their energy or body’s electrical system. These disruptions can be caused by a myriad of things, such as the IRS, difficult relationships (past and present), physical conditions, grief, life transitions, childhood traumas, life’s everyday stressors, even the weather.

At the end of their healing sessions they emerge transformed, embodying profound peace and relaxation. Many of their issues no longer are painful and burdensome. “Can you imagine feeling this way all the time?” I ask. “Wouldn’t it be wonderful!” is the response. It is more possible than you may think.

“All negative emotions are caused by an imbalance in the body’s energy system.” Gary Craig, founder of EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique).

“Someday the medical profession will wake up and realize that unresolved emotional issues are the main cause of 85% of all illnesses.” Eric Robins, MD.

Actually, medical science has been using instruments to measure the electrical impulses (energy) of the body for years. Examples are the electroencephalograph (EEG) which records the electrical activity of the brain and the electrocardiograph (EKG) which records the electrical activity of the heart. Einstein also told us long ago that everything is a form of energy. Quantum physics states that energy and matter are interchangeable, and the String Theory suggests that differences in physical matter are simply variations in energy vibrations. Indeed, our electrical (energy) systems are vital to our emotional as well as our physical health.

Ancient practitioners of Chinese medicine taught that energy flows along meridian lines in the body. These meridian points act as a governing force in healing and growth. When the energy points are blocked or unbalanced, the person experiences emotional disturbance or dis-ease. If not corrected but compounded, it could be the cause of many diseases.

Dr. Roger Callahan, a cognitive psychologist, found that by directly treating the blockage in the energy flow along the meridians created by a disturbing thought pattern, the disturbance or upset disappears. It virtually eliminates any negative feeling previously associated with a thought. It makes me think of when a computer program locks up on you and rebooting the computer resets everything back to normal.

Alternative Health Practitioners have found ways to use this vital energy system to help physical and emotional healing. Among practitioners working with this energy system are Acupuncturists, Massage Therapists, Chiropractors and Energy Healers.

On my personal path of healing and as an energy-healing practitioner I have found a multi-directional approach most affective and have received great benefit from the traditional medical profession, chiropractic, acupuncture, nutritionists, massage therapy, prayer and gratitude, as well as being the recipient of the energy-healing methods used in my practice. I rejoice in the benefits of profound peace and the healings that occur on many levels for myself and others.

The first step toward world peace is personal inner peace. As the song goes, “Let there be peace on earth, and let it begin with me.”
